Great Lost Tracks - An Everyday Series - Page 27 Empty Re: Great Lost Tracks - An Everyday Series

Post by Immo Fri Jan 09, 2009 1:28 pm

It's the words...

...always the words.

A wee story....

This next track was voted number 8 on the Mojo top 100 songs of all time and it's not by a hip, indie-skinny nor cock-monsterish classic-rawk flavour of the month-type...

"absolute legend doooood Rolling Eyes "

...artist like ya would 'speck.

Bonnie Raitt - chuggiest of all the rootsy, worthy ginger-haired female AOR-ists. cheers

Plumstead/Mainstream Nashville production No

No alarms - no surprises...

But check out the words - the story... cheers cheers

It's the song stoopid Rolling Eyes

The guy who wrote this was an ex pro-footballer (American) and his inspiration came from a court case that he read the details of in a local (Pennsylvania) newspaper.

Apparently some sad-sack, beaten-down, love-bruised booze-hound had shot at his girlfriends car as she drove away from his abode.

He got lifted and appeared in front of a patronising magistrate who asked him if he had "learned anything from this episode", to which he replied,

"I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."

And from the banal came the profound

And from the strong came forth sweetness

Pure syrup pirat Very Happy

Pure genius

Of course sometimes it is just the performance

The hat at a certain angle...

The Brooks Bros suit a bit careworn...

The Cardin tie loosened from the unbuttoned collar of the Rael Brook button-down...

The spiral of smoke from the ashtray-berthed fag rising into the unforgiving glare of the bar-mounted halogen spots......

(Paul Morley sat at the end of the bar sayin"That's a bit overblown - even for me. I'm off. Very Happy )

Words by Rod McKuen

Strings by Don Costa

Sinatra may be the ultimate song technician/mechanic

But nobody pounds ya right in the gutbucket the way ole Tone does.

Like a big, good-natured Italian baker (with impressively chunky and hairy forearms Very Happy) suddenly bustin into song from the sheer joy in his soul.

Elemental and instinctual in a way that the perfectionist genius - Francis Albert - could admire but never emulate. No

He knew it..

It's prolly why he described him as

"...the best there is. He's a pigeon-blood ruby... and that's the rarest ruby that exists."

I saw Tone and Ralph Sharon at the Theatre Royal in the 80s

A treat chief cheers
