Ahhhh the mixtape [o-o]
A labour of love it was in the old days
There was the 'theme' to consider
Although this usually broke down into the holy trinity of 'Rockers', 'Dancers' or 'Late-Nite'
(Occasionally there would be a specific, non-musical theme provided on request. I remember makin an 'America' themed C90 comp for Toots about 1981. She hadta give her famously testy/grouchy pater a lift home from work every night and requested a specifically geographic musical distraction for reasons which currently escape me )
Once the theme was set the real work began
Compiling the 'big' list and whittling it down...
Picking out a few instrumentals for the end of each side in case of tape run-out at a key point in a song....
Picking out (in a pre-downloading world) some records where there was a bit of spoken-word stuff/advertising clippage...
(Church of the Poison Mind has a great intro. When played after the Archie McPherson clips on the B-side of Rodney's 'Ole-Ola' it achieves an almost monumental status )
Last task before you start actually recording the thing...
(And obsessively trying to achieve a perfect link between the tracks )
You had to wind the spool past the run-in tape to ensure you were recording immediately and wouldn't miss the first intro.
Very important the opening track....
You know what's comin next duntcha
Opening track for 'Dancers'
Course... all that's gone now innit

Re: Ahhhh the mixtape [o-o]
Rockers is a tricky category. You can go literal and kick-off with a couple of thunderflashes...
Or you can go a bit p*st-m*dern and trashy about it.
Another opening
Another show
Secuhn vuhrsss...

Re: Ahhhh the mixtape [o-o]
Did I post this link already?
I don't remember it
I'll have my brief cite the 'Swansway' (Mcgrory vs The rest of the grit-eatin world 2010) precedent if it goes to court

Don't know whether you've posted the link before, but you've written a
very similar mix tape one previously. Good stuff though immo, and anyway,
repetition is good.
