'For Richer, For Poorer' by the unspeakably clever and gorgeous Vicky Coren
Sample convo from every single Monday night during the current run of 'Only Connect'...
Me - That Vicky C is a total
Toots - HAW!! Ah'm no yer mate - right??
You'd need to know your way round a hand of poker - but she's a beautifully emotional writer and the bits where she talks about her relationship with her father...
(the equally Alan Coren)
...are real "I've got something in my eye stuff"

Re: Book rec...
My recent buys have been The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, Paula Spencer & The Deportees by Roddy Doyle along with The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Fuck knows if they're any good as I've not read them yet

Re: Book rec...
The only one of those I've read is The Road.
Bleak, blasted and brief (You'll plough through it in a night or two)
It's one of those books that you'll be haunted by weeks after you've finished reading it.
The best thing he's ever written I reckon.
I dunno how else to describe it
You know how when you watched Schindler's List and thought "That is one of the best films I've ever seen... and i never want to go through watching it again?
It's a bit like that.
I recced it to my wee cuz - not realising she was looking for a page-turner/poolside/holiday read.
She's still in two minds whether to forgive me or not

Re: Book rec...
I bought Shindlers List & Hotel Rowanda years ago mate on DVD, still to watch either. I've really got to be in the mood to watch films like that but books are a different matter for some reason

Re: Book rec...
I hadta take a pause break in the middle of Schindler and go and have a cuppa tea and a lie down before the denoument.
Don't think I've ever been hit in the guts by a film that much ever.
Weird feeling.
Know what you mean about being in the mood to watch that kinda thing tho.
And yes... books are different - I'd go with ya on that one.
Dunno why tho
