Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
Wasn't sure where to post this
Best blog-reaction so far to last night's outstanding display of fan-dannery by Engurlund.
From the Grauniad
I apologise for my language in advance but:
James: meh
Johnson: shit
A Cole: shit
Terry: shit
Carragher: god awful. Shit
Lennon: shit
Gerrard: anonymous. Shit
Barry: unfit. Shit
Lampard: shit
Heskey: first touch further than I can kick it. Shit
Rooney: angry headless chicken. Shit.
How the blithering heck can players not pass the ball to the feet of a team-mate 15 fucking yards away. How the cocking arse can corners, over and over again, be taken that don't clear the first man? How, in the name of all that's fucking sane can players not hold 2 lines of fucking 4? Christ on a fricking trampoline.
The one straw I'm clutching is:
1990, drew the first game 1-1. drew the second 0-0. won the third. got to the semi-finals. that's it. that's all I've got

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
I was happily ripping the pish out of various English rellies and friends last week, but I feel that's almost too cruel now!
The key word there being 'almost', of course!

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
Gotta say I'm quite enjoying the WC so far Mits - but then I always do.
The curmudgeons complaining (justifiably I s'pose) about the poor quality of some of the early games seem to be forgetting that it's always like this in the early stages as teams are a bit cagey/nervous.
Me? I just love the fact that you can watch a a game between Chile and Honduras at half-twelve on a Wednesday dinnertime knowing that even if it sucks... you've got another two games to look forward to.
We should be approaching the four-games-a-day period soon.

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
I've not seen too many full games live because of work and other commitments (including the Embra Filmfest which started on Wed ), but the BBC website and red button stuff has allowed me to keep up with the highlights at least.
I agree about the predictability of having a few dull games in the group stages, but there have been a few belters too. Enjoyed USA-Slovenia yesterday. Fucking awful refereeing decision for the USA 3rd 'goal'!

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
Here is my contribution, please be gentle on the grammar.
Capello is immune to the hysteria that conditions the English media who have an elevated opinion of themselves. They think they can influence the manager. It doesn't take long for a bit of xenephobia to find its way through either .Was interesting to hear the Capello interview on 5Live last night. He actually used his interpretor to field questions.A smart move from Capello but one which will have the London based journos absolutely livid. As for the players ,these primadonas who are over paid and overated are also starting to wonder if they can work with Capello who basically is not impressed with their credentials .I actually dont think Capello rates the English players at all.
I have really enjoyed watching Ghana in this competition.Argentina have yet to really switch on and god help the rest when they do.

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
Read somewhere that only 38% of Premiership players are English nowadays. Guess they reap what they sow. Same happened in Scottish football years ago, and we haven't put a decent side out in 12 years.
If Capello can't get this team into the last 8 no-one can imo. Although they could still win v Slovenia and pick up, it doesn't look like it.
tbh I find the sneering about England an embarrassment tho. I've had several people down south ask which team I'm supporting over the past week. They seem convinced we're all supporting whoever they play against, and I sure don't. I want Spain or Argentina to win, but only because I like the way they play.

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
Back to the coverage of the tournament.Mark "Lawro" Lawrenson is my pet hate.Adds nothing to the actual football discussion at hand.Seems to spend most of the 90 mins asleep ,whilst interjecting with one off unfunny comments.Totally devoid of any knowledge of tactics and general appreciation of football world outside the EPL.Clearly does not research the teams beforehand.

Bewls, that was a great link to the North Korean stuff you posted on the Scotland site.
But what about this below? I hovered over the 'edit' icon, but didn't 'follow follow' to that link

Fucking hell, Brazil v Portugal is a terrible game. Roll on half-time and I can treat myself to some marmite and tomatoes on toast.

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
I had a tenner on Ivory Coast to win the World Cup (60-1), thinking that if they had got out that group, they would have gained impetus. But the obrigado mod had it stitched up.
However, I've enjoyed it so far, even although the spaniels and chillis were eventually over friendly tonight as well.
The players are too physically fit now though, and there is less individuality about these tournaments. And the altitude at 7 of the venues has had a lot of influence, especially as they are playing with a balloon.

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
just seen Torres dive, I hope they chop his legs off the diving fecker. Of course I could be motivated by the fact that me and the wee fella have a tenner on who gets farther, the Spanish or the Germans

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
He was fouled but he did make a meal of it, Jimmy.
I was glad Chile got through in the end though, they deserved it.
Plus the Swiss are down there with the Austrians and Bavarians as whining diving cunts in my book.

Re: Shouldn't we have a WC thread?
Looked like a complete dive to me an'all James - disappointing
So long as Spain & Chile got through that's the main thing tho - easily the two teams in the group that were most entertaining to watch.
Nice wee schedule today...
Watch the Uruguay/S Korea game chez-moi with a couple of frosty ones from the fridge and a bifter or two...
Spot of sustenance in the form of chorizo & herb-stuffed pork chops w green salad....
Up to The Woody for a few scoops and the Ghana/USA game in the company of Toots, Big Ginger fae Wishy and his partner, the lovely and talented Kaz.
Happy daze
