What happens in vegas, stays in Vegas

Post by supermo on Sun Dec 12, 2010 11:33 am

Nevada. Desert state. And, of course, home to Las Vegas, a city that really does never sleep.

Here's a difficult invitation-to-refuse, as soon as you've passed Customs:

In truth, Vegas is testament to the shallow existence we live today, and often a monument to bad taste. Each casino hotel building a visual and aural assault on the senses....tacky malls, fat addicted gamblers on slot machines, and indifferent food.

However, it is difficult to tour Vegas without a smile on your face, if only at the garishness of it all. Or the sleaze, while persistent little Mexican guys promise "a girl for you....in 20 minutes! Mastercard and Amex accepted!", and suchlike.

And it does have (ahem) the Eiffel Tower.

This fountain outside the Bellagio is a lot of fun, as it goes off in line with some great music.

We worked in Vegas all last week. Gilly's is a pretty ordinary Western states bar, all guys in Stetsons drinking beer and listening to awful country music. However, it does do a sharp dish of chicken tenders and some very fine award-winning Pork Green Chilli.

Donny & Marie are doing a residency at the Flamingo. Sadly we just couldn't find the time...

This weekend, probably one of the most incongruous gigs was on. Live! In Vegas! Mister! Leonard COHEN ??

To the Hoover Dam. Because they actually think al Quaeda might drive over the dam and blow it up, the Yanks spent $244m on a big feckin new bridge, then for good measure named it after a football player who got killed in Afghanistan (ah, patriotism). Here's the bridge from the dam...

And here's the dam from the bridge.

That's the Colorado River of course, very unlike this, which is a fake canal in a mall dedicated to Venice. At least it didn't smell like Venice.

Finally, we couldn't visit Nevada without taking Stennymites to the desert scene where Big Tony sleeps....after me and Bertie had to do sort him out for the mob.

BT lies under the second bush to the right. Or it might be the 17th to the left. If only Dreamghirl and KAD were six feet under somewhere nearby Very Happy

Best report yet, the Hoover Dam looks worth the effort of visiting Nevada on its own

Cheers Jimmy. We finished up early on Thursday so drove up to the Dam, les than an hour out of Vegas. Well worth the trip.

PS Planet Hollywood is the pits, don't ever eat there, if it was in the St Enoch Centre it would be condemned by the council.

Thought the pictures were a bit good for the gayphone. (I read the exif)

The pics are a mix from the iPhone 4 and a borrowed Lumix (the small one), Licker.

Left the Canon at home, we had too much gear on the carnet as it was.
