Where'd we hear that before? Ponder2

Naomi K knew.... two years ago. Twisted Evil

Whatever the events of this week mean, nobody should believe the overblown claims that the market crisis signals the death of "free market" ideology. Free market ideology has always been a servant to the interests of capital, and its presence ebbs and flows depending on its usefulness to those interests.

During boom times, it's profitable to preach laissez faire, because an absentee government allows speculative bubbles to inflate. When those bubbles burst, the ideology becomes a hindrance, and it goes dormant while big government rides to the rescue. But rest assured: the ideology will come roaring back when the bailouts are done. The massive debts the public is accumulating to bail out the speculators will then become part of a global budget crisis that will be the rationalization for deep cuts to social programs, and for a renewed push to privatize what is left of the public sector. We will also be told that our hopes for a green future are, sadly, too costly.

Jesus man stop posting, the place barely recovered from your response to Mo's thread Very Happy

Seriously though, the electorate put the Tories in (with the help of those sell out bastards) but the Labour party had sold its soul 15 years previously and to be honest there was fuck all else for middle England to vote for. Its just a pity I'm caught up in the fallout, though you might notice from my post I'm blootered and if you can make sense of it you're a better man than me

Can't see a problem with ending universal benefits. The idea of any family with a joint income of £100000 picking up this handout in pretty poor.Dont stop at that though. The winter fuel allowance and free public travel for oldies should be punted as well .But only for those who can afford to drive in their Rovers to the shops or spend half the year in Tuscany or in the case of Govantites , Benidorm. It can then be redirected to the people who really need it.All in all that should save about £5bn

Then we have the Bankers. I am afraid they are going to get away with picking up on average a £70k bonus each. And what is the threat being levied at them for this display of greed and indulgence? "They should start lending money to business or we will be very angry with you" says Cameron.. Hardly going to stop it is it!!! I am afraid the CONDEM cabinet is full of the wealthiest MP's we have seen for a long time. The term "we are in this together" makes me puke.

You misunderstand me James.

Was worried when you said you'd been "caught up in the fallout". I thought mibbes the cuts had already had personal consequences for y'self.

Anyways - I've seen some of the folk stuff you post. If I thought you were a Tory after that little lot, I could definitely be accused of not paying attention. Very Happy

The whole country's been living on tick for far too long. Mortgage borrowing reached ludicrous heights with 100% (sometimes up to 125%) lending, self-certification, and the rest. The bankers are just symptomatic of the problem, most of them are greedy cunts and they took the money because it was there.

But hey the same attitude has led to a situation where tens of thousands of civil servants, quangocrats and fuckwits are earning more than the PM. There are 350 BBC managers on more than £100k a year, and 150 of them are on more than £200k.

Brown as Chancellor will go down in history as the guy who stoked a credit boom, let the banks off with "light touch" regulation, and borrowed like fuck to sustain a ludicrously inflated reliance on the public sector. Just wait till our grandchildren get the bill for PFI, thanks to Gordo. I'm no Tory but that cunt took stupidity to new levels, yet in Scotland people seem to think he's some kind of fukkin genius.

The casualties, as ever, will be the poor, but they won't be alone. But we are all to blame. In our own part of the world, whatever we do, we behaved like we were all fukkin dotcom millionaires, borrowing like fukk, driving up house prices, demanding unjustifiable salaries and spending like there was no tomorrow.

All that's happened is that now it is tomorrow, and the credit party's over.

The mortgage thing is madness, we bought our house years ago and I was panicking taking out a £30000 mortgage. We paid more than 50% deposit, how these people can sleep at night (or live) when they're paying at levels 4 times their wages and have no equity is beyond belief scratch

25 years ago to get a mortgage you got 1.5 times earnings, or that plus 1 x spousal earnings if you were a couple. And you usually had to demonstrate to the bank (sometimes in an interview!) that you could afford it.

10 years ago you could get 3 x earnings and 1 x spouse.

By the mid-noughties you could get 5 x earnings or - even more laughable - you could "self certify" your income. Or, even funnier, you could get more than 100% mortgages. People were buying more than one home on the basis of a (rarely actually checked) declaration that they could meet repayments. Asking for a credit card with a £3,000 limit? Make a few minimum payments on time and you could soon get that limit upped to £10k, 20k, and higher. Then the call centre would call to suggest you max the card to "fund that special wish".....

I know a pair of dolts who paid £410,000 for a house they couldn't afford (now worth £340,000 on a "real" valuation, btw) and BORROWED £450,000 (self certified, natch). They also bought a flat to let out to DSS claimants. And guess what, one of them lost his job (salesman) six months ago. Bit by bit I can see their "assets" disappearing, the two cars have gone already.

Just like bankers there were always people who take things to the limit - credit cards, tax frauds, benefit frauds, nice warm pension schemes that paid at 55 plus a lump sum and final salary - and the "Iron Chancellor" (what a fukkin joke) kept throwing more fuel on the fire.

It's too easy to say "it's the bankers". Yes they're cunts, but they're not the only cunts.

And some of us gave up our pension schemes a few years ago Jimmy, they just weren't worth paying into anymore... Evil or Very Mad

I'm sure it's fine at that level Bewls. Just keep an eye on the annual statements.

In my case I'm self employed and pension arrangements aren't really worth it.

I check it every week to be honest .Looking to retire at 60 but 55 would be nice.

Anyway back to the bankers.I have no issues with anyone earning bonuses but these guys where not in it for the long run. They where opportunists and risk takers.Except they where taking risks with our dosh. Have a read of City Boys by Geraint Anderson.Sort of poacher turned gamekeeper read Illustrates just how these cunts indulged themselves in greed whilst the nation was going bankrupt.
