I Cycled 33 Miles Today
The good news is the numbness I was getting in my hands wasn't noticeable, the bad news is that my knees are fucked and my arse feels doesn't feel right
Even worse, my wife made me cut the grass when I got home. If it wasn't for red wine I'd be disconsolate

Re: I Cycled 33 Miles Today
Shit, forgot, loads of cyclists suffer from hand numbness, normally caused by incorrect seat height/reach settings, experiment til you find the correct position. If it helps, I sometimes experience numb hands, so it's just one of those things.

Re: I Cycled 33 Miles Today
Cycling's addictive isn' it James? You'll be after a road bike next and purchasing ProCycling to read in your underpants.
I meant to say, 33 miles on a hybrid is a fucking good effort. If you're cycling that sort of distance you should be taking some food with you. Cheap cereals bars (the crappy and sugar filled the better) eaten at hourly intervals will stop you hitting the wall, and more importantly stop you eating everything in sight when you get home.
After a long ride you'll crave crsips or cake (the CP has banned me from eating cake in case I put weight on, I'm even banned from looking at pictures of cake ) , both are bad. I finish my rides so after showering (which you want to do as soon as you've finished, wearing sweaty pants will give you saddle sores, cleanliness is key) it's mealtime, this stops you eating crap and cures your hunger.
Next week, tips on chain rotation.

Thanks for the tips crown, on the 33 miles run I had a Solero about 26 miles
Sunday run I didn't even have a bottle of juice as the kids had scoffed all the ribena. Thank fuck it wasn't warm
Its alright Mo, my cleanliness is beyond reproach

Water is more important than food (no matter what sevvy says ) while cycling.

Re: I Cycled 33 Miles Today
Any update on the cycling James?
This week's tip is purchase some clipless pedals and shoes. They greatest innovation in cycling is clipless pedals. I ride Shimano SPD-SLs with yellow cleats, as they have 5 degrees of float and are kind to your knees. You feel at one with the bike when using clipless, get your wallet out James.
Pedals:

Shoes:

Buy a size up from your normal shoe size as your feet swell while exercising.

I'm on my holidays mate, took the bike but haven't cycled much
Will my feet clip into those pedals, I'm a bit unsure about that. Also the shoes are sold out in my size

i imagine the swelling is commensurate with the amount of erm "excercise" you put it through.

You screw cleats (red things in pic below) to the bottom of your shoes and they clip into the pedals:

Any shoes that have the three triangle mounting points will work with SPD pedals. A lot of shoes accommodate all cleat fixing arrangements, check before buying, or give me a shout if you're not sure.
If you're on holiday, surely you should be visiting The Falkirk Wheel, and popping for a pint with uncle immo?

Fuck no, though I am going to Perth on Saturday
Just been out on a cycle from Seil to Luing, it was only 14 miles but none of it was flat. I didn't believe my odometer but seems it was telling the truth

You could cycle from Seil to Falkirk, convivial afternoon in the pub with uncle immo then cycle back with no fear of drink driving. Are you man or mouse James?

Re: I Cycled 33 Miles Today
Right, now its stupid question time crown
Cleats, obviously I need to buy them as well and will need a bit of movement? What degree? What brand/type etc
Does your toes clip into the pedal or is it the sole of the foot and how easy is it to get your feet out in a hurry?
There will be no more

Re: I Cycled 33 Miles Today
If you buy Shimano SPD-SLs pedals (the ones I linked to earlier) the cleats will come with them. They’re normally the yellow cleats which provide 5 degrees of float. Red ones provide no float, but if set up correctly will be fine.
Setting up cleats:
Sit so your feet can dangle freely, a worktop or desk with nothing under it. Note whether your feet point in, out or are straight. Look at both feet as they may not be symmetrical so the left cleat needs fitting different to the right. If both feet are straight, align the cleats parallel with the shoes. If your right foot points outward, fit the cleat so that when your foot is pointing in its natural direction (outwards) you twist the cleat inwards so it’s pointing forwards and set up the left cleat in relation to how your left foot points.
To be honest, if your feet are pretty straight and you have yellow cleats just align them forward pointing with the shoes, you’ll be fine, it’s s bit more important with red ones.
You can buy replacement cleats and they are a fucking rip-off:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shimano_SPD_SL_Cleats/5360008129/
I favour swapping some porn DVDs with filthy Wayne for my cleats.
Your toes play no part with cleats, the cleat fitted to the sole of your shoe engages the pedal. To disengage the cleat you turn your ankle outwards a small amount.
You will fall off in the most embarrassing of situations, mostly traffic lights in town, but only because you’ve forgotten to unclip.
You can adjust the tension of the pedals, so unclipping is easier, by turning an allen key half a turn, instructions come with the pedals.
That sounds complicated doesn’t it? Sorry, it’s just my lack of eloquence, it’s really straight forward.
Cleats improve your cycling (you can pull up as well as push on the pedals so increasing your power) and your enjoyment.
Ignore mo’s grooming jibes, he’s just jealous because he’s too old for me to groom, senile old fool.

Meant to ask, what's the best treatment for a cracked perimeum?
Is there a cream to prevent/repair, I was in considerable pain last week
